Research Interests

Characterization of Porous Materials

The porous networks present in high surface area materials control reactions in solids. In addition to affecting the transport, adsorbates can interact with and even profoundly change the solid's structure. This symbiotic relationship is found in filters, polymerization catalysts, and molecular sieves. We are developing the techniques to analyze porous materials and are investigating the complex, often dynamic, transformations that take place. A primary focus is on adsorption, diffusion, and transport in zeolites.

Microwave Reaction Engineering

Microwave energy often has a unique ability to influence chemical reactions, resulting in more efficient processes and new products. Specifically, recent studies document enhancement of nanoporous oxide (zeolite) synthesis, selective separations, and catalytic reactions employing microwaves. However, the mechanism and engineering for the enhanced reactions are unknown. We are studying microwave-assisted reactions by in-situ spectroscopy and applying microwave reactor engineering to understand the nature of microwave enhancements and to control these processes.

Catalysis

Catalysts are the single most important contribution of chemical engineering to our everyday lives. Catalytic reactions add trillions of dollars to our GDP, reduce pollution, and decrease resource consumption. Our work on catalysis ranges from metallic catalysts to zeolites to solid acids and bases. We are currently interested in catalysts that serve as bases, particularly nitrogen-substituted zeolites. The goal of this research is the catalytic synthesis of biodiesel and other liquid fuels from so-called renewable sources.
